Two months ago, Kenyan afropop band, Sauti Sol released the impressive “Melanin” featuring reggae and dancehall artist, Patoranking — the first official single off their new LP, Afrikan Sauce.
The band revealed that the album won’t be getting a conventional release; it will be unveiled over a twelve month period, featuring top artists from all across Africa. And they just dropped the second single from the project: “Girl Next Door” featuring afropop sweetheart, Tiwa Savage.
Produced by the talented Maleek Berry, the mid-tempo “Girl Next Door” is a totally infectious love song. On the adorably cheesy track, Sauti Sol and Tiwa Savage sing about the feeling of finding love that has been right under your nose all along — in this case, falling for the boy or girl next door.
As great as Sauti Sol is on the track, “Girl Next Door” is undeniably elevated by Tiwa’s presence. 2017 was definitely her return to form — from her acclaimed EP to her impressive features — and her work on this song is no different. She absolutely kills it.
The music video — which was shot by Unlimited LA — isn’t quite as memorable as the video for “Melanin”, but it’s still stunning. It follows Sauti Sol’s Bien-Aimé Baraz and Tiwa Savage as they spend a big chunk of the video flirting from a distance.
